Durable Flooring Solutions for Alberta Pacific’s High-Performance Pulp Mill

On the banks of Canada’s Athabasca River lies one of the world’s most productive, technologically advanced paper pulp mills. Alberta Pacific Forest Products produces more than a half million tons of pulp each year used to make paper products distributed worldwide.

When new secondary containment areas were proposed for Alberta Pacific, planners knew they needed floors that would be resistant to thermal cycling and corrosive chemicals. The product would also need to withstand extreme seasonal freezing and thawing cycles due to the mill’s geographic location. One problem for installers meant having to remedy the many air voids within the freshly poured concrete substrate before any lining could be applied.

Its unique formulation allows for installation in harsh environments like cold and damp areas, and the product’s rapid cure rate allows businesses to resume production quickly.

To mitigate the substrate issue, installers used the same Stonchem primer used for surface preparation to fill in the air voids in the concrete. Planners and management at the facility were extremely pleased the Stonhard experience and remarked how Stonchem 403 exceeded their expectations. Additional work was contracted for acid pump trenches, as well as concourses, ramps, retail operations, and restaurants on-site.
